“A REVIEW OF CHURCH ORDINANCES”

Intro:

There is an old statement that “one extreme follows another.” I believe the church ordinances (practices or disciplines) have been neglected. Some of you older people can recall how at one time the doctrines and ordinances were stressed and with what exactness they were adhered to.

Ordinances should be presented in an understandable way, so that every member knows them, and knows why he or she believes them. I want to consider a few of them.

Body of Sermon:

BAPTISM:

Jesus, who established the church, instituted a number of things to be practiced by the church. One which has been in the church since its beginning is baptism. It is a common subject and most people understand it in a general way. Yet it is important enough to deserve careful consideration.

Baptism, in the sense of purification by water, was a common practice among the Jews, long before Jesus time. In Christ, we have an example of baptism; not for His sins, but He passed through this ordinance in the same way He expected His followers to.

Jesus last instructions to His disciples, was “Go Ye.” “Baptizo” was the original Greek

word, which means “to dip, to immerse in water, to put under, to cover up…”
