No doubt you have heard it said that “God is love.” That is one of his fundamental character attributes. But to truly understand what that means, we need to look closer at some Bible verses about God’s love.

bible verses about god's love

The Bible is not silent when it comes to verses about God’s love. It mentions in multiple places that not only is God love in and of himself but that he also love us. His love towards us is unconditional – meaning that it is not up to us. God loves us despite ourselves and the things we do.

That is comforting to know because being loved by someone is a fundamental human need. Everyone wants to be loved by someone. We function best when we are surrounded by others who care about us.

With that in mind, let’s look at 5 fundamental Bible verses about God’s love that every person should know.

Bible Verses About God’s Love

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Any look at Bible verses about God’s love has to start with John 3:16. God doesn’t just love a select group of people. He loves the entire world. All people groups, races and cultures have access to his love. He loves so much that he sent his only son Jesus to die on the cross so that every human could have a relationship with Him.

God’s desire is that all will be saved. He wants people to believe in Jesus and choose to follow him. The rewards for that are great, both in this life and the life to come.

Romans 5:8

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.”

Perhaps the second most important Bible verse about God’s love is Romans 5:8. This verse explains that we did nothing to earn God’s favor. We are sinners and cannot earn our way into relationship with God. He is perfect and holy, and we are not. That is what makes this verse so powerful.

God knows this about us. And despite our sinfulness, he chose to send Jesus Christ to die for us anyway. God did this for us before we realized our need. By doing so, God provided the framework for us to have a relationship with him. All we have to do is believe and accept it.

Love Without Limits

Psalms 86:15

“But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.”

God’s love knows no limits. It is infinite, without end. God acts with compassion towards us and never gets tired of loving. His love is full and never-ending.

This is fascinating because we have a hard time loving other people to this extent. We easily tire of people, how they act and how they treat us. Consequently, we choose to not show them the love they deserve.

We should take our cue from God who demonstrates patience, kindness, forgiveness and mercy to us no matter what we do. If you doubt God is like that, then read about Jesus’ description of the Father in the parable of the prodigal son (link below).

Romans 8:35, 38-39

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution or famine, or nakedness, or peril or sword?…For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any created things shall separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

These Bible verses about God’s love are absolutely amazing! No matter what we are going through or are dealing with, nothing can separate us from God’s love. This is comforting to know especially during the hard times. When we are alone or persecuted by our fellow man or spiritually oppressed, God is there with us.

The person who wrote these words, the Apostle Paul, knew this all too well. As a missionary in the early church, there were times when he was alone, when he was pursued by his enemies, when he faced spiritual warfare. God’s love was very real to him then, just as it can be for us today.

Love As an Action Step

I John 4:7-8

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

The final passage on our list of Bible verses about God’s love shows us once again that the essence of God’s being is love (“God is love”). It’s his character, his nature. But it expresses more than that.

God calls us to demonstrate his love to one another. It’s the action step believers are to take – to love others the way God loved us, unconditionally and without exception. And that includes those we disagree with and who don’t love God at all themselves.

Love is Always the Best Path

Loving others is always the best course of action. It’s not easy but it is what we are called to do. And when we show love, it ultimately points people back to God.

In conclusion, if you’ve like further reading about the powerful effects of love, read I Corinthians 13. In that passage, Paul clearly lays out the standards for what love should look like as we interact with others. And it’s another clear picture of how God demonstrates his own love for us.
